The National Endowment for Democracy

The National Endowment for Democracy
A US program aimed at fostering democracy worldwide

Launched in the early 1980s, The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) is a private, nonprofit organization working to increase international cooperation among existing democracy foundations and to encourage all established democracies to create similar institutions. Its website is very rich-in-content providing well annotated records in various formats from text files to photos, from simple lists to videos. About 6,000 projects on democracy, supported by seven international grant-giving organizations and provided in the Democracy Projects Database, are offered to all users. Book collections, paper journals, grantee reports, and other publications on democracy-related topics are provided for free and archived in the Online Catalog, a collection holding approximately 15,000 works collected over the past twenty years from NED. Only for some full-text journal articles a payment is required. Users can also find a relevant number of information about the center’s mission and projects as well as about special awards, employment opportunities and fellows programs with a good updating rate. The website features an efficient navigational structure, with a site map and a FAQ file. Clear categorization and linking structure enables easy and fast orientation and record locating. Many format options for downloading, included multimedia versions, are also provided.
